Our Mission
A leading pole for the exhibition of photographic and other images whose resolutely open approach embraces all periods (from the 19th to the 21st century) and practices (photography, cinema, video, installation, etc.), Jeu de Paume produces, coproduces and hosts exhibitions as well as film programmes, symposiums, and public activities, and also pursues a publishing programme. It shows both established figures (Sophie Ristelhueber, Martin Parr, Robert Frank, Jean-Luc Moulène, Bruno Serralongue, Edward Steichen, Richard Avedon, Lee Miller, Lisette Model, André Kertész) and emerging talents (Cyprien Gaillard, Denis Savary, Virginie Yassef, Mario García Torres, Agathe Snow, Tris Vonna-Michell), attracting a considerable and varied public whose interest and support is growing steadily: to give an idea, attendance increased from 200,000 visitors in 2006 to over 320,000 visitors en 2008.

Jeu de Paume also supports Internet art on its website, which hosts specially created artists’ projects (“L’Île de Paradis” by d’UltralabTM, “Local Time” by Angela Detanico and Rafael Lain, “Le Dadamètre” by Christophe Bruno, “The Angelo Foundation: The Headquarters” by Angelo Plessas and Andreas Angeladakis, "All Over" by Samuel Bianchini).

Jeu de Paume works actively to extend its network of exchanges and develop its international reach, whether by presenting the exhibitions it produces abroad (“Joël Meyerowitz” at the Art Center, Athens, and the Museum of Photography in Thessaloniki, Greece; “Paris Capitale photographique. La collection de Christian Bouqueret” at the Alinari Archives in Florence; “Valérie Mréjen” at the Palau de la Virreina - Centre de la Imatge, Barcelona; “Alec Soth” at the BBK, Bilbao; “Kertész, ma France,” at the Museum of Photography, Reykjavik; “Willy Ronis par Willy Ronis” at the Centrum Kultury, Poznan; “Jordi Colomer” at the Laboratorio Arte Alameda, Mexico City), or by programming “extramural” projects conceived specifically for other art centres, museums and cultural institutions (“Willy Ronis” at the Rencontres Photographiques d’Arles in 2009; Camille Silvy (1834-1910): Photographer of Modern Life" at the National Portrait Gallery (London) in 2010; “Mark Lewis” at the Printemps de Septembre, Toulouse, in 2008 and at Maison d’Art Bernard Anthonioz, Nogent-sur-Marne in 2009).

In its efforts to promote the culture of the image to a broad public, Jeu de Paume has created its “Mardis Jeunes” when, on the last Tuesday of each month, from 5 pm to 9 pm, admission to Jeu de Paume is free to students and visitors under 26, thus enabling them to enjoy the exhibitions, the films presented in the auditorium and the thematic tours and cine-talks. Every Sunday at 4.30 pm, too, visits are organised with families, to help adults and children enjoy the exhibits together.

Lastly, Jeu de Paume is building up online resources by publishing the proceedings of symposia on its website and posting a number of its talks and “filmed portraits,” videos of exhibitions with interviews of artists and curators, enriched with hypertext links using keywords and links to online videos.

Jeu de Paume is subsidised by the Ministry of Culture and Communication. It gratefully acknowledges the support of Neuflize Vie, its global partner.
Its president is Alain Dominique Perrin and its director is Marta Gili.
