In little more than a decade, the young Argentinean filmmaker Matías Piñeiro (1982) has produced a corpus of sensual and original films that ingeniously explore the connections between literature, theatre and cinema.

This retrospective organised in conjunction with the Festival d’Automne is the first French presentation of what is one of the most invigorating and challenging bodies of work in cinema today, a bracing mix of artistic creativity and formal experiment. “Pour l’amour du jeu” takes us through the already prolific career of Matías Piñeiro which is ripe for discovery in France.

Piñeiro’s films are all based on great literary classics, yet they are anything but simple adaptations. Rather, they result from a distinctive process of translation that has become this artist’s signature. He speaks of “variations,” “extensions” and “profanations,” and “contaminations,” or indeed “desacralisations” of the original texts. Light and luminous, his works vibrantly revisit his sources in a contemporary spirit. Whether he is working from the texts of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento (a humanist and president of Argentina from 1868 to 18784), the plays of William Shakespeare (in what he calls his “Las Shakespeariadas” series), Matías Piñeiro has developed a style that is a fusion of the languages of theatre, literature and cinema. In these orchestrations art, music, love and acting merge harmoniously into a lithe, sinuous world.
