Ana Mendieta. Covered in Time and History
Tour of the exhibition with curator Howard Oransky
16 October 2018
18h00 to 19h00
Concorde, Paris

In the course of her short career, from 1971 to 1985, Ana Mendieta produced a remarkable body of work, including drawings, installations, performances, photographs and sculptures, but also films. Although the latter are the least-known aspect of her production, they constitute a particularly impressive and prolific corpus: the 104 films that she made from 1971 to 1981 show her to be a central figure in the multidisciplinary tendency that emerged in the visual arts in the 1970 and 80s.

Drawing on new research, the exhibition at Jeu de Paume moves these films from the periphery to the centre of the artist’s work. It is articulated around the recurring themes explored in these works: memory, history, culture, ritual and the passing of time, often evoked in relation to the body and the earth. Mainly shot in natural settings, the films put Mendieta’s interest in the four elements – earth, water, air and fire – very much to the fore.
