Discussion with Pancho Saula

Sunday 16 December 2018 • 11:30 AM

Jeu de Paume – Paris

To mark the publication of his book Madagascar, Jeu de Paume and MW Editions (New York) invite you to meet photographer Pancho Saula in conversation with travel writers Sonia and Alexandre Poussin.

“The work is delicately balanced, frame by frame, to offer the reader the intimate sensations Pancho had of the light, the textures, the spaces that we too might notice—even things as insubstantial as the weight of shadows under the tropical sun—and he subtlety suggests as well the kinds of lives lived there in all their quotidian and understated simplicity. But what is truly beautiful to me is the delicately whispered ambiguity of meaning that the photographs carry.”
Joel Meyerowitz

Pancho Saula is a photographer and artistic agent covering multiple disciplines. In 2017 he travelled to Madagascar, where he took black-and-white photographs of local people’s life. Joel Meyerowitz saw the pictures and encouraged him to publish. Madagascar, which came out earlier in 2018.

Sonia and Alexandre Poussin are travel writers and documentary filmmakers. In 2014 they conceived a project they called “Madatrek” which involved travelling around the island of Madagascar with their children. They set off on 16 May 2014 in a cart drawn by zebus, and completed their journey on 19 August 2018, when they reached Antananarivo.

Discussion in the Espace Éducatif, Sunday 16 December at 11.30 am.
Admission free, first come first served.

The discussion will be followed by a book signing in the bookshop.
