Uprisings, from the Goutte-d’Or to the Concorde
Combined tour: Institut des Cultures d’Islam - Jeu de Paume
12 November 2016
14h30 to 17h30
Jeu de Paume, Paris

Devised by the Institut des Cultures d’Islam and Jeu de Paume on the occasion of the exhibition “Soulèvements” (Uprisings), this itinerary goes from the Goutte-d’Or quarter in the 18th arrondissement of Paris to Jeu de Paume on Place de la Concorde.

This walk from the streets of the Goutte-d’Or, with its courtyards and old washhouses, is also a journey back in history. It will recall the republican banquet at Château-Rouge, the closure of the Ateliers Nationaux in 1848, the Commune, the war in Algeria, the assassination of Jilali Ben Ali in 1971, the episode of the undocumented workers in the church of Saint-Bernard twenty years ago (being commemorated this year), as well as many other recent actions in favour of migrants and cultural venues in the quarter whose existence is now threatened.

After a mint tea at the Institut des Cultures d’Islam café, the walk will continue in the galleries of Jeu de Paume with the exhibition “Soulèvements.” This ambitious project conceived by philosopher and art historian Georges Didi-Huberman brings together historic and contemporary images capturing the gestures of those who rise up against the state of the world, or who raise up the world: collective or individual gestures, actions or passions, works or thoughts. Gestures that say no to a state of history considered too oppressive, whose “heaviness” therefore needs to be lifted, if not rejected. Gestures that say yes to an alternative: to a desired better world, an imagined or sketched world, a world where living and thinking are at last possible.
